“Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves and, of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys they’d just walk around naked at all times.” – Betsey Johnson
Since today is the season finale of the XOX Betsey Johnson television show. I thought today’s fashion idol would be appropriate to have a spotlight on Ms. Johnson! A.K.A my personal favorite designer!
Betsey Johnson was born on August 10,1942 in Connecticut. Since she was young, she had a passion for the arts for becoming a dancer. She has trained in a wide variety of dance and adored wearing her dance costumes. That is where she found her calling of becoming a fashion designer. After high school, Betsey went to Pratt for a year majoring in Art and Design for a year. Then she transferred to Syracuse University and graduated.
In 1964, Betsey Johnson entered the New York fashion world by winning a “Guest Editor Contest” from Mademoiselle magazine. Then a year later the funk, rebel, aspiring artist landed a position for Paraphernalia. Which is a clothing boutique that holds all the latest London designers merchandise collections. She soon got notice for her punk, sexy silhouettes, and whimsical details.
1970, Ms.Johnson left the boutique and took a job at Alley Cat as a creative controller. Alley Cat, is a sportswear brand that is known for bright bold designer clothing for more club scenes. A year after that Betsey got awarded prestigious Coty Fashion Critics Award at 29 years old. Once Alley Cat went out of businesses, Betsey started working as a freelance designer. Then in 1978, she launched her brand Betsey Johnson label. Which was available for women from dresses, accessories, and shoes. With her first retail store in SOHO, New York.
Her career and designs sky rocketed in fashion world, making her a household name. With her elaborate neon color tutus to her bulky layered accessories. The Betsey Johnson brand opened 65 stores throughout the United States. Then she has her annual fashion shows, which seemed like a giant party when attending. With every fashion show, at the end Ms. Johnson does her iconic cartwheels to a split to end the night.
Then in 2012, the designer filed for bankruptcy causing her to close all her retail stores. This did not stop the designer to step away from the fashion industry. The Steve Madden team bought the brand ,and allowing the designer to do what she loves as design merchandise and continue to be the face of the Betsey Johnson brand.
Now Betsey Johnson has a show on the Style Network called, XoX Betsey Johnson with her daughter Lulu. Where they follow the mother and daughter relationship through the new transformation of the Betsey Johnson brand after the bankruptcy. Also, the show follows the designer’s pride and joy Lulu on her journey into the fashion industry with her designs.
In my opinion, Betsey Johnson is one of my favorite role models. She shows how nothing can stop you from reaching your dreams. Also, she has a design aesthetic that is like no other. From her punk style to a classy witty tea party, she knows how to WERK IT ! Also, her brand has so much merchandise that you can not help but shop. The brand has accessories, prom dresses, bathing suits, shoes, bags, everything! If you are looking for a head to toe look for a fun night, this is the brand to look for!
